- Before the start, cyclist GREG LEMOND downplayed his chances
- for another victory. "If I'm even in the Top 20, it will be a great
- Tour," he said. It seemed a far cry from 1986, when he became the
- first U.S. racer to win the 2,000-mile Tour de France. This time
- he was trying to stage a comeback after illness, injury and a near
- fatal hunting accident. On the final day of the marathon, he sped
- down the Champs Elysees, almost a minute behind the leader. He
- crossed the finish line just 8 sec. ahead of his closest
- competition, the narrowest margin in the Tour's history. That was
- something to celebrate, and what better way after 23 days of
- pedaling than a night on the town?
